Microwave Ablation Is Safe and Effective for Uterine Fibroids
Ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA) is a safe and effective treatment option for uterine fibroids (UFs), according to the results of a recent study.
The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis including 10 studies and 671 participants. They used the Uterine Fibroid Symptom and Quality of Life (UFS-QoL) questionnaire to assess clinical effects.
Overall, UFS scores decreased significantly (standard mean difference 3.37, 95% CI 2.27–4.47) and QoL scores increased significantly (SMD –3.12, 95% CI –3.93 to –2.30) compared with baseline. No major adverse events were observed, and the rate of minor adverse events was 21.1%.
“In conclusion, as a minimally invasive alternative to surgical interventions, MWA is an effective and safe treatment in the management of symptomatic uterine myomas, especially for women who want to avoid surgery. Despite the limitations, our study revealed valuable information on the clinical outcomes after MWA treatment, and more research is needed to provide accurate evidence.”
