Identifying, Assessing Health Risks in Patients During Wellness Exams

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” Barbara Jo McGarry MD said in her Practical Updates in Primary Care (PUPC) virtual session. “That’s what we are trying to give in our wellness visits.”

Dr McGarry is a family practice physician in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.

In her session, titled, “What’s New in Wellness Exams: Tackling the Annual Physical,” Dr McGarry organized specific screening categories associated with annual wellness exams, offered specific approaches for identifying and assessing health risks in patients during wellness exams, detailed how to manage routine screening tests and some high-risk screening tests, and discussed recommended routine health treatments, including lifestyle optimization and vaccine options.

The presentation also included a review of two patient cases, followed by Dr McGarry’s screening tests and vaccine update recommendations based on the patients’ history and wellness exams.
